How the UV Index Varies by City
The UV index in any US city depends mostly on latitude, altitude, and typical cloud cover. Southern and high-altitude cities like Phoenix, Tucson, and Denver regularly reach extreme UV levels (11+) in summer, while northern cities like Chicago and New York peak closer to 8–9. Coastal fog, humidity, and smog can also knock a point or two off the UV index on a given day.
